#68: Paul Lehrman and the Bad Boy Make Good
Paul Lehrman is a musician, composer, educator, filmmaker, music technologist, author of several books including “The Insider Audio Bathroom Reader”, and was a columnist at Mix magazine for over a decade. Additionally, he currently teaches at Tufts University as the head of the Music Engineering program. Paul was in NYC for the AES convention in 2019 and stopped by Sear Sound to talk with John and Stewart about his career in the music industry, both as a writer and in studios. In this episode, Paul shares his deep knowledge of MIDI, the history of early electronic instruments and music, playing the bassoon, and orchestrating performances of the near lost 1924 electro-mechanical composition “Ballet Mecanique.” Flowing throughout Paul’s interview is a profound sense of the absurd which springs from his love of the humor of The Marx Brothers, Tom Lehrer, and The Firesign Theater.
